Chateau Nenin Pomerol 2016

Chteau Nnins vineyards grow on a single block of land with the exception of one plot. In Pomerol, where it is rare for an estate to exceed 10 hectares, Chteau Nnins vineyard is considered very large, with 32 hectares of vines in production. As a consequence, its terroir includes the many, diverse soils that characterize Pomerol. It is mainly made up of Oligocene deposits covered by Dordogne alluvial gravelly formations; siliceous clay and gravel, quartz, granite, iron deposits, and basalt pebbles. Chteau Nnins vineyards grow on the great clay-gravel terroirs of the Pomerol Plateau.

Chateau Nenin Pomerol 2016 is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc picked from 18 September until 8 October at 37 hectoliters per hectare. For the first time, the Grand Vin includes a new selection of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon from sections on the plateau that were replanted in 1999 and 2000. It has a lifted and generous bouquet with raspberry, wild strawberry, and violet aromas, just a hint of clove emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a lovely savory/bell pepper note originating from the Cabernet Franc and there is very good depth and persistence on the finish.

Critical Acclaim

98 James Suckling

Aromas are full of crushed blackberries and blueberries with fresh mushrooms and sandalwood. Full-bodied, very tight and focused with a fabulous density of fruit in the center palate and a long, flavorful finish. Shows strength and, at the same time, finesse. Try after 2023.

95 Wine Enthusiast

Made by the winemaking team of Loville las Cases in Saint-Julien, this is a densely structured wine, rich in generous fruit while also having balanced acidity.

96 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Blended of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Nenin is deep garnet-purple colored and opens with beautiful Black Forest cake, baked blackberries, and blueberry compote scents over a core of Chinese five-spice, sandalwood, and lilacs. Medium to full-bodied and laden with black fruits and spicy layers, it has a gorgeous velvety frame and just enough freshness, finishing long and vibrant.

93 Vinous

The 2016 Nnin is a gorgeous Pomerol. Supple and inviting, 2016 offers quite a bit of immediacy. There is a lovely freshness to the dark plum and blackberry fruit, while beams of supporting tannin give the wine its shape, focus, and overall feel. There is a lot to like in 2016. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from four hectares of vineyards on the plateau across the road from Trotanoy that were replanted a few years ago. Nnin is another terrific wine from Jean-Hubert Delon in 2016.

93 Wine Spectator

Features a core of dark boysenberry, aai berry, and black currant fruit that is direct, pure, and polished, carried by solid but integrated tannins through a slightly muscular finish. Offers a lingering licorice snap accent and a nice twang of iron-edged minerality. Well-built.
